Green Works… It Works, Naturally

Clorox and the Sierra Club set new standard for corporate, environmental partnership

A message from Clorox CEO Don Knauss:

On behalf of The Clorox Company, I am pleased to share the news about Green Works™ products, the first line of natural cleaners developed by a major consumer products company.

I am equally proud to announce another first: an alliance with the Sierra Club, the oldest, largest and most influential grassroots environmental organization in the United States.

Our partnership with the Sierra Club is significant for Green Works and for our entire company. It is critical for the environment that industries such as ours move toward sustainability. We are honored to have the opportunity to turn to the Sierra Club for counsel and guidance as we make our journey to becoming a more sustainable company.

As you can imagine, the dialogue with an organization so committed to the environment didn't happen overnight. Extensive conversations between the Sierra Club and Clorox took place over several months. They included tough questions and straight answers not only about Green Works, but about our complete product portfolio, sustainability initiatives and corporate practices.

The leadership of the Sierra Club wanted the truth about bleach — and we told them. They wanted to be sure we had a chemical-of-concern policy. They wanted to know about our carbon footprint. And that was just the beginning.

As exacting as those conversations sometimes were, the questions were important for us to hear and already have helped guide our path forward.

It took a product like this to bring us together — proof in its own way that green works. Finally.

For generations, the Clorox® name has been associated with products that work. So when we decided to create a natural line of cleaning products, we wanted them to work … naturally.

It wasn't easy. Without an industry standard for what “natural” means, we developed our own tough tests and, in the process, developed Green Works™ natural cleaning products that are as effective as conventional cleaners. The products' ingredients come from natural sources like coconuts and lemons. They're biodegradable, formulated to be nonallergenic, not tested on animals and packaged in bottles that can be recycled.

We think we've set a new standard for what natural can and should be. But for some fragrance and color, our Green Works products are completely natural — the most natural cleaners on the market today. But we're not satisfied with 99 percent, and we're searching for good sources of natural fragrance and color so we can achieve our goal to deliver 100 percent natural cleaning products.

Green Works™ natural all-purpose cleaner, natural glass & surface cleaner, and natural dilutable cleaner have earned the Design for the Environment seal from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
